I attended a wonderful conference about how high schoolers need to advocate for themselves as they apply for accomodations or help through the learning center at their college. Be sure to have updated testing completed!
Recognize your rights and responsibilities and how they differ with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)
- American with Disabilities Act Amendments indicate that a disability can include interference with thinking, concentration, and reading
- Students needs to be able to articulate and discuss their learning disability and how it impacts them in plain language
- Be aware that testing accommodations may differ as compared to when in high school
- Do not necessarily expect course substitutions (foreign language or math).
- Students often have received extensive accommodations in high school and expect them to continue in college and this may not be realistic.
- Transition planning needs to start early
- For those with ADHD, breaks are likely more important than extended time
- Testing agencies cannot consider the ameliorative effects of mitigating measures such as medications or use of technology.
- You can receive ADA accommodations for psychiatric diagnoses but need to show current impairment within the next six months.
- Check appropriate ETS disability documentation at http://www.ets.org/disabilty.html
